introduction to BIG6™ Skills

Essential Question:

  • How can learning how to do research impact all areas of our lives?

Objectives:

  • Students will be able to identify the skills associated with Big6™.
  • Students will start to plan their essays using Big6™ skills.
  • Students will work on first steps for their research.

Language Objectives:

  • Students will define Big6™ and associated skills in their own words.
Standards:
 
Commom Core Standards:
CCSS.ELA W.7. Conduct short as well as more sustained research projects based on focused questions, demonstrating understanding of the subject under investigation.
CCSS.ELA W.8. Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, assess the credibility and accuracy of each source, and integrate the information while avoiding plagiarism.
CCSS. W.9. Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

ISTE Standards:
3. Students critically curate a variety of resources using digital tools to construct knowledge, produce creative artifacts, and make meaningful learning experiences for themselves and others.

Model School Library Standards:

1.The student will access information by applying knowledge of the organization of libraries, print materials, and other sources.

The Lesson:

  • Welcome
  • Library Expectations
  • Hook:
    • Quickwrite: Write down ten words that come to mind when you hear the words "research paper"
    • With a table partner, students will share their answer
    • Students will then rate each other's responses as positive, neutral, or negative
    • As a whole group, the class will discuss perceptions on researching
  • Through:
  • NOTE: Students should have a topic to research. The topic does not have to be developed into a thesis, though.
    • Students will receive a copy of the graphic organizer.
    • TL will explain each of the six BIG6™ skills.
      • Of the six skills, only the first three can be completed during class.
    • Using their own topics, students will:
      • generate five-six research questions (#1);
      • list types of sources and where to find them (#2);
      • create a research plan that covers when and where they will go to get their information (#3).
  • Next Steps:
    • Students will create an outline for all six skills with self-created definitions for each of the skills
